Interview With DP Da Prophet

1. For people who may not know who DP Da Prophet is can you give us a lil background info on you. Who is the man behind the music?                                                                                       D.P. Da Prophet is a man from RVA, born & raised that experienced life on both sides of the bridge. The good, the bad, the hood & the suburbs. That made me who I am today. A leader, a father, an artist who expresses emotion, hustler & a lover by choice but a fighter when needed.

2. What’s the story behind the name DP Da Prophet?
Well I started off writing poetry, mostly for the girls I liked but eventually to let out pain and the things that were bothering me as a kid in this cold world. Soon the poems I wrote turned into songs & the songs had meaning, so I always looked at myself as a Prophet who has a message to spread that has to be heard. The D.P. is for Da Poet, then you add in Da Prophet & get me.
3. What is the creative process like when you’re writing new music?
Let me take you into my world…dim the lights, grab a couple Smirnoff’s, no hard liquor (I’m not making watered down syrup music)…pull out my notebook & pen and yes I still write my rhymes on paper. Typing just doesn’t feel real enough when it’s coming from the heart. Put my phone on silent, fire up the mac & plug the headphones in…Silence…then I start playing through beats from my producers. When one sticks I just put it on repeat over & over and start freestyling out loud to myself. Those words I come up with within seconds go down on the paper & a song is created. I write most of my hooks also, sometimes before the verses some after. Before I record the song I’ll proofread it, make changes if needed to enhance it & let a selected few preview so I can hear their trusted opinion.
4. Where do you draw inspiration from when writing lyrics?
My current life, my past, pain. love, the struggle, our culture, the streets, the underdogs & world issues.
5. Are you seeking to make it big in the music industry or are you just creating your music as an outlet?
Success is defined by the person in the mirror. Once people learn this they can start enjoying their dreams vs. stressing to make it & get a title because like my homie Joe always says “titles can be taken away but who you are or who you become cannot!” For me music is an outlet. Now if I happen to make millions then great but as a man either way I must make sure my family eats.
6. If you could sit down with industry leaders and express what issues you think are the worst in regards to getting Indie artists music heard… what would they be and why?
Well that it’s more about money than music and I agree that artists must invest in themselves like any business because I do everyday but if the budget is huge & right the music doesn’t matter because it will be forced on listeners and made hot by the media while so many talented artists who do invest just on a smaller scale are overlooked. We need to get those scouts back out there in the streets offline to discover these type of artists.
7. Let’s talk about your new single Believe. What was the inspiration behind that song?
Last year was probably one of the roughest years in my life due to health complications & the fact that my nephew passed away at only a few months old. I could feel myself slipping, falling, but as I fell to my knees I had to put my hand down on the ground, then the other & push myself back up. I had to believe that no matter what, I had a chance to get rid of the pain, to go after my dreams & to be happy. I wrote this song not only for me but for those who needed a little motivation to believe in themselves no matter what they’re going through.
We wanted to make something that had a mix of hip hop & G-Funk so the bass played by David Blayne kind of adds that element to it under a amazing beat created by Nate Rhoads. We let the beat ride out at the end on this one because even when the words stop your heart can feel the instrumental still riding.
8. Are you currently working on any other projects you want to tell us about?
“Believe” which drops everywhere 1/29/16 is more of a introduction, a EP to show people what I can bring to the world of hip hop. My debut album will be the next step and project I’ll be starting on.
9. What do you love so much about music?
No matter how you are feeling there is music for your mood. Music is at least 3 of your senses combined. Vision, hearing, and touch. You can hear the music through your ears which is an experience in itself. Music paints pictures through words creating a vision in your mind. It also touches the heart & soul.
10. It has been a pleasure interviewing you today how can people listen to your music
and continue to support you?
Thanks for the interview and the time you spend supporting musicians and artists.

I recall a recent conversation I had with Leonidas when he said,

“Going through the struggle not only can you rebound but you can come back stronger”.

I wanted to share that to give some encouragement to my family and people who loved him, to let them know Leonidas went through the struggle and now he has rebound and stronger than before. He is now at peace with the Lord, where there is no more suffering.

Please continue to pray for the Young family,

We love you Rev. Leonidas Young  II (Rest In Paradise)
